The lower a province's sanitation, the higher the risk of an outbreak which has a chance to trigger each turn. Plagues have been reworked and are now tied closely to the sanitation levels within each province. Combat this by constructing certain local buildings and mustering more armies. When banditry is on the rise, you will see a decline in a province's food output, which could lead to a global food shortage. In the Empire Divided campaign, the province detail tab now displays a banditry bar which increases as your empire grows. Some consider emoticons and ASCII art, like smiley faces, to be leet, while others maintain that leet consists of only symbolic word encryption. It is now also used to mock newbies, also known colloquially as n00bs, or newcomers, on websites, or in gaming communities. Once reserved for hackers, crackers, and script kiddies, leet later entered the mainstream. Creative misspellings and ASCII-art-derived words were also a way to attempt to indicate one was knowledgeable about the culture of computer users. One theory is that it was developed to defeat text filters created by BBS or Internet Relay Chat system operators for message boards to discourage the discussion of forbidden topics, like cracking and hacking. The Cult of the Dead Cow hacker collective has been credited with the original coining of the term, in their text-files of that era. Leet originated within bulletin board systems (BBS) in the 1980s, where having "elite" status on a BBS allowed a user access to file folders, games, and special chat rooms. The leet lexicon includes spellings of the word as 1337 or leet. The term "leet" is derived from the word elite, used as an adjective to describe skill or accomplishment, especially in the fields of online gaming and computer hacking. There are many dialects or linguistic varieties in different online communities. Additionally, it modifies certain words based on a system of suffixes and alternative meanings. It often uses character replacements in ways that play on the similarity of their glyphs via reflection or other resemblance. Leet (or " 1337"), also known as eleet or leetspeak, is a system of modified spellings used primarily on the Internet. So hearing all those guys and girls say that to us is amazing.” Even if it’s within our community … the Black and Brown community, even all of us have different perspectives. … (We) just let them kind of get some things off their chest, applying them with information that we have and experiences that we have to help navigate them through the spaces of which they live in.”įord added: “A large portion of it is about getting different perspectives. “The kids kind of speak about how they feel, what they’re thinking, how they’re processing certain things that are going on in the world versus in their household versus, you know, at school. In each session, the Onyx group gathers to have a mindful discussion around a current event or personal experience, followed by a workout.Ī lot of the time, the “discussions are more important to us than the actual working out,” Muhammad said. The older kids who participate in the program are usually on the path to mentorship, or learning how to navigate life as an adult and seek out a desired career. “If we’re going to create a base, we need to start with our youth members, teaching them about health and fitness as well as trying to spark them as the next generation of professionals,” Ford continued. “If we don’t change the foundation that has led to the inequities and inequalities that we’re dealing with, then ultimately, there’s going to be still some institutional racism that exists.” If a strong and equitable society is like a mountain, “no peak exists without a base to the mountains,” Ford explained. The Empowered Youth Program serves people of color ages 14-20 from underprivileged communities in central Iowa and aims to give the members an equitable chance at living healthy and prosperous lives.įord used a metaphor from a book by Robert Livingston to explain the focus on empowering young people. Project Onyx is focused on younger generations and instigating change early in life. The mission of the nonprofit is to eliminate the barriers that underrepresented and underserved people of color face by providing affordable and accessible health and fitness services, offering mentorship for youth and future professionals, and empowering Black and Brown communities to take charge in a challenging cultural landscape while staying healthy and active. Project Onyx was officially founded in September 2020. Muhammad said in order to continue to push for diversity, equity, and inclusion in CrossFit, more Black people will need to discover the community, and two ways to do that include accessibility and representation. In the CrossFit space - training, teaching seminars, going to competitions - you don’t see many Black people, so you stand out so much.” So everything that I’ve done has revolved around CrossFit. Then I became one of the fittest in the world. “I got out of college and I became a CrossFit coach. “The only job I’ve ever had is CrossFit,” Muhammad said. Muhammad said helping to diversify the health and fitness space, especially in CrossFit, is something he finds great value in. These kids need us now, and we have to try to make the change.’” Let’s just get it off the ground, because I don’t want to wait. “‘Why wait for people to give us the go? … We’ll learn as we go …. Within 10 minutes, “We got started,” Ford said. So I literally just started looking up research papers about racial health disparities to see what they were, how they existed, and why they existed.”įord reached out to a fellow leader in the fitness community in Muhammad, a two-time CrossFit Games athlete and owner of CrossFit Unorthodox, to see if he would be a part of the project. Unsure of how to initiate change effectively, Ford took to what he knows best. “I was in a profession where I was helping people, but I wasn’t helping my people as much as I should - Black Americans,” Ford said. While reflecting on his own life experiences as a biracial Black American, “I just decided to, you know, start doing something that I knew to help,” Ford explained. Last June, Muhammad received a call from Patrick Ford, a nearby physical therapist who was motivated to use his expertise in health and wellness to “help eliminate fitness and health disparities in the Black and Brown communities.” “Sometimes you don’t really know what to do, so you just start doing something and figure it out as you go!” Elijah Muhammad wrote in an Instagram post reflecting on the origins of Project Onyx. Dishonorable Mention: Kopi Luwak (Civet) Coffee Many reviewers have called it the quintessential cup of coffee and it clearly stands among the world's top gourmet coffees. Grown in Jamaica's Blue Mountain District, Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee is often described as sophisticated with a smooth and silky, complex taste, outstanding full body, and very well balanced. Is there any way to possibly quantify that Jamaican Blue Mountain is twice as good as a Kona (being twice the price)? or 4x as good as Kenya AA (at 4x the price)? No: it's nowhere near that astronomical of a difference.įeedback from regular coffee drinkers (not coffee snobs) indicates that it's a good cup of coffee, but falls on the mild side with subtleties most won't appreciate for a daily drinker. The flavor is delicate, sometimes revealing winey notes and a velvety feeling on the palate.īuy Kenya AA Coffee Beans Honourable Mention: Jamaican Blue Mountain CoffeeĬoffees from Jamaica's Blue Mountain region are often named the "Best Coffee in the World", but when it comes to price vs. The best Tanzania coffees have a taste that is deep and rich, often revealing hints of black currant which soften to chocolate and then blend into the coffee's lingering, sweet finish.Ī medium roast provides an aroma that is floral and complex, often exhibiting hints of pineapple, citrus, or coconut. Kilimanjaro, Tanzania Peaberry coffee beans are a bright Arabica coffee with a medium body and delightful fruit-toned acidity. Note: Which of these coffees you should buy isn't as important as whether what you're purchasing is fresh roasted - coffee is at it's peak flavor within days of roasting, while many bags of coffee sit on store shelves in Starbucks and Amazon for weeks or months before they finally arrive at your door step.Ī great cup of inexpensive fresh roasted single origin coffee will always be better than best (and often priciest) old, stale blends. And it becomes critically important when photographing birds who have Whites in the range. It is always a good idea to cross check the color range that your subject is exposing you to. I had set it to a value of 320, which allowed me to not lose the details in the white and at the same time not underexpose the blacks. Given the shutter speed and Aperture that I wanted I was not left with much choice on ISO part. To do that I had set my aperture to an f value of 9.0. To overcome this, it is always a good idea to select a narrow aperture to get more of the bird in focus. But it is easy to miss out on focus at the right place. Compared to smaller birds, tracking and composing gets easier with larger birds. One plus point about Photographing large birds is, it is easy to fill the frame. This was also due to the fact that I had set my camera to a crop mode which gave me an equivalent focal length of 900 mm which is 1.5 x crop factor. So, I chose to set my shutter speed of 1/1600 sec. They say, in birding things can drastically change just at the drop of a hat. But, while Photographing birds, though I was trying to shoot birds sunbathing who are not moving much, still you must be ready for an unpredictable action. The rule of thumb is to have at least a shutter speed of 1/focal length to avoid any camera shake. When photographing with a long lens, you cannot be more watchful about your shutter speed. This not only makes the scene look interesting and compelling, but also allows you to make your subject look majestic and powerful. A busy background will only distract your image look clumsy and lose focus from your main subject, unless done creatively to showcase the habitat.Īnother thing worth mentioning is, when it comes to Photographing birds, I prefer a low angle shot which our eyes are not used to of. Next would be to take care of the background. It is always a good idea when photographing birds, that we look out for ways to create some separation between the birds when you have more than one bird in the scene. Thankfully, now there were no unwanted distractions. This crawling game continued for the next 15 minutes. I would click a few shots while being on my knees and then step forward without making sudden movements. They must be still about 150 meters away from where I was. There were Juveniles, Females, colorful Males, few Gulls, and of course lots and lots of crows. So the birds had flown further away and now the Gulls were beyond my reach, but Brahminy Kites were still in my range. And what surprised me the most was his next statement, “What difference does it make if they flew away, they will come back.” For him it was all fun, I just gave up on him. I totally lost my cool and walked to the person and asked him why did he do that? And his response was, “He wanted a closer shot”. Before I could respond, he had already finished the game before it could begin. And there was hardly anything I could do about it. But to my surprise, an overly enthusiastic mobile Photographer ran for the birds to get a closer shot. Soon I found myself crawling with my big lens Sony 200-600 mm. I took my position and started framing the scene staying low. I took out my gear which is always ready for photographing birds and started evaluating the scene. The busy shoreline, with the birds doing their usual business at the beach, must be just about 200 meters away from the road where I parked my Car. When we reached the spot, I saw Sea Gulls and Brahminy Kites sunbathing at the beach. Just a note though, not recommended between 10:00 am to 03:00 pm, as it gets really-really hot. Perhaps you can decide based on the time of the day you reach, if you want to photograph the beach birds there. Now it’s up to you, which side you want to go. Every stop that you make in the Danushkodi road, gives you two options, a beach on the left and a beach on the right. If you have the luxury of driving in Danushkodi, do not miss it. The road running straight like an arrow cutting the Ocean into two halves was quite a sight. We were thrilled by the beauty this place had to offer. This was our third visit back to back to this mystical place called Dhanushkodi, from our 3-day trip to Rameshwaram, in the month of November 2022. It’s teatime in London, and Olivia Wilde is. "When it comes to evaluating the results of the alerting tests, the FCC is collecting information both from EAS participants and participants in WEA," a spokesperson for the FCC said Tuesday. But conducting Wednesday's test still allowed them to gather valuable information from the companies that participated. Spokespeople from FEMA and the FCC said both agencies are confident the emergency alert system works as intended for television and radio broadcasts as well as mobile phones. "So, one of the reasons that you might do something like this is to test the technological limits of the system, to make sure that it's available in that way." "If at some point the time comes that we need to put a wireless emergency alert to the entire nation, for some really serious, catastrophic event, the ability to send out messages in little places, smaller counties, smaller geographic areas, is not the same as having the capacity to distribute those messages across the entire system," Trainor explained. 11, was scheduled in case other emergencies, like extreme weather, prevented it from going forward as planned on Oct. Wednesday's test was conducted to evaluate the technological capabilities of the national alert system to reach and inform as many people as possible in case of a widespread emergency. Since 2015, FEMA has been required under federal law to test the Integrated Public Alert and Warning System at least once every three years, and those tests can involve the Emergency Alert System, wireless alert system, and other alerts and warnings. Every system has limits, and that's why we tell people, when we are giving advice about building warning systems, you don't ever want to rely on just one thing." Why was the alert system being tested? How many characters you can use, how much you can transmit, how fast you can get it out. "Like any system, there are strengths and weaknesses. "We know that they are effective systems," Trainor told CBS News. and abroad, to develop their emergency warning systems and procedures. Trainor has worked with government agencies before, in the U.S. "With the combination, you're going to catch a wide swath of people," said Joseph Trainor, a core faculty member at the University of Delaware's Disaster Research Center, who studies the design of disaster warning systems and how they operate, with a particular focus on mobile warning systems and smart warning systems. This was the third nationwide test of wireless alerts, and the second nationwide test transmitted to all cellphones, FEMA said in a statement.Īs the Wireless Emergency Alert test was sent out to phones, the Emergency Alert System test was sent to televisions and radios. Six previous tests were conducted over the years between November 2011 and August 2021. Wednesday marked the seventh nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System. Emergency alert messages that made up the test were divided into two groups - the Emergency Alert System for radios and televisions, and the Wireless Emergency Alerts for wireless phones - although both happened at once. The Federal Emergency Management Agency conducted Wednesday's test in coordination with the Federal Communications Commission. Therefore, the price is of this convection oven is justified.
